The NEXEN Winguard Ice 3 is one documented Nordic-winter option. NEXEN TIRE lists it as a Nordic passenger-car winter tire, with Ice Grip among its published product markings and performance indicators.

Short answer: one set or dedicated winter tires for an icy mountain commute?

Use a dedicated studless winter set when the pass regularly has ice between November and March. Ice is the condition that leaves the smallest margin for a one-set compromise. In Tire Rack’s independent comparison, the Blizzak WS90 recorded a 57.3-foot stop from 25 mph on snow, and the publication describes the difference between cautiously circulating the test track and being able to drive it as central to the winter-tire experience.

An all-weather tire still makes sense for a driver with no storage, no second wheels, and no realistic way to schedule seasonal fitting. It stays on the car through cold rain, shoulder seasons, and summer highway miles. The Michelin CrossClimate2 is the clearest documented one-set candidate here. Michelin rates it with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol, gives it a 60,000-mile warranty, and positions it for occasional winter conditions.

Michelin also directs drivers who frequently travel on snow-covered and icy roads toward winter tires. That is the dividing line. A pass that ices most mornings is frequent winter use, not occasional snow.

What all-weather and studless winter tires are designed to do

All-weather tires are year-round road tires with winter capability built into a design intended to remain fitted through warm weather. The Bridgestone WeatherPeak is a grand-touring all-season tire with Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake certification and a 70,000-mile limited warranty. The CrossClimate2 is an all-season road tire for cars, SUVs, crossovers, and vans.

Ordinary all-season tires are built around broad temperature and rain performance. They are not automatically severe-snow-service tires. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe stated in 2022 that advanced winter tires for severe snow conditions are marked with the Alpine symbol, or Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake, and must pass a special snow-grip test for type approval under UN Regulation No. 117. It does not turn a snow certification into an ice-braking distance.

Studless winter tires belong on the other side of the decision. The Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 is sold for winter, snow, and ice use. The Continental VikingContact 7 is a winter tire for passenger cars, crossovers, SUVs, and light trucks. NEXEN TIRE lists the Winguard Ice 3 as a Nordic passenger-car winter tire.

For a route where ice is regular, selecting a dedicated winter category is an evidence-based editorial interpretation of the available winter-versus-all-weather comparison, rather than a universal category rule. It is not the right way to avoid seasonal ownership.

How to read the published results

A tire result is useful only inside its test conditions. Vehicle, size, surface, temperature, tread depth, and test method can all change the outcome. A snow-stop claim from one manufacturer should not be turned into a master ranking beside another manufacturer’s wet-braking claim.

The CrossClimate2 has the fullest published test context in this group. Michelin cites third-party snow-traction testing under ASTM F1805-12. It reports scores of 93 against the Standard Reference Test Tire in 235/55R18 and 90 in 215/55R17. Michelin’s wet-braking testing used a 2020 Toyota RAV4 in 235/55R18 from 50 mph. Its dry-braking testing used a 2019 Toyota Camry in 215/55R17 from 60 mph.

Those figures speak to the CrossClimate2’s published program. They do not provide an ice-braking ranking against every winter tire named here.

What a one-set all-weather tire gives up—and gives back

That convenience matters most when winter is brief and roads are usually cleared quickly. It also suits high-mileage commuters who spend far more time on wet and dry pavement than on snow.

The tradeoff appears when the commute is governed by recurring ice rather than occasional snow. Michelin’s own CrossClimate2 guidance draws that boundary: its all-weather tire suits occasional winter use, while frequent icy-road driving points toward winter tires. That is why I would not make a one-set tire the first choice for a teenager crossing a frozen pass before daylight.

The WeatherPeak is the other documented all-weather-style option with long mileage coverage. Bridgestone claims its tire stopped 14 feet shorter in snow than the CrossClimate2 in an internal comparison. That is a snow result, not an ice result. It should be read as a manufacturer comparison, not as a substitute for an icy-road test.

Evidence-limited options for a regularly icy mountain pass

Choose a dedicated studless winter tire set when the route regularly has ice. Fit four matching tires in the vehicle’s correct size, load index, and speed rating. Keep the set on the car for the season when morning temperatures, shaded corners, and packed snow define the drive.

A documented Nordic-winter option

NEXEN TIRE lists the Winguard Ice 3 as a Nordic passenger-car winter tire. Its published product page identifies Ice Grip and lists directional stability on icy-road conditions among the manufacturer’s product claims.

As a dedicated winter tire, it is intended for a winter-and-three-season arrangement rather than year-round warm-weather mileage. Drivers who cannot store a second set should use the Michelin CrossClimate2 instead. Michelin gives it a 60,000-mile warranty and specifically positions it for occasional winter conditions.

For a winter-only set with a published price

The Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 is a dedicated winter, snow, and ice tire. Bridgestone lists 11/32-inch tread depth for the 185/60R15 size and shows that size at $135.99 per tire.

Its single limitation is the size-specific nature of that price. A small sedan may use a different size, and every tire quote should be made for the placard specification on the driver’s door jamb. The Winguard Ice 3 and Blizzak WS90 are both documented winter options, but the available material does not provide a comparable independent measurement that ranks one above the other.

For severe-snow-service certification

The Continental VikingContact 7 carries the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake mark. Continental says it meets severe-snow-service requirements from the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association and the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada. It is offered for passenger cars, crossovers, SUVs, and light trucks.

Its single limitation is that the published product material does not place a current retail price beside the tire. Drivers comparing seasonal budgets should get a quote in their exact size before treating it as an alternative to the Winguard Ice 3 or Blizzak WS90.

Qualitative ownership discussion for a 20,000-mile driver

At 20,000 miles per year, the cost question is not simply “one set versus two sets.” It is how those miles are divided.

Without comparable purchase, installation, balancing, seasonal-fitting, and storage prices, the cost of either plan at 20,000 miles per year remains unresolved. A winter-plus-three-season plan divides mileage between two sets. It adds seasonal fitting and storage, but it also prevents the winter set from carrying summer mileage.

The long-warranty all-weather options make their case here. Michelin lists 60,000 miles for the CrossClimate2. Bridgestone lists 70,000 miles for the WeatherPeak. Those warranties are useful ownership terms, but they do not answer whether the tire is the right choice for a refrozen pass.

NEXEN TIRE’s Turkish warranty page states that its limited warranty may apply for up to six years from manufacture or five years from purchase, subject to the applicable market and warranty conditions. Its free-replacement period runs until the first 1.6 mm, or 2/32 inch, of usable original tread wears away, or for 12 months from purchase, whichever comes first. The owner pays installation, balancing, service charges, and applicable taxes on an adjustment or replacement under that policy.

For a high-mileage driver, split the decision into two questions: how many cold-season miles demand winter traction, and how much does the route punish a loss of ice margin? For a 20,000-mile commuter, lifetime-cost evidence does not resolve one set versus two; recurring ice remains a separate traction consideration.

Mountain-readiness checklist

Read the placard on the driver’s door jamb before ordering. Match tire size, load-carrying class, and speed class to the vehicle manufacturer’s requirement. NEXEN TIRE’s warranty requires a size, load class, and speed class equal to or greater than the vehicle recommendation.

Install four matching winter tires. Michelin warns that mixing tire types across axles or within an axle creates handling inconsistencies that are difficult to predict because the two axles can respond differently to braking, acceleration, and cornering inputs.

Check pressure when temperatures drop. Rotate tires and check alignment every 10,000 km, or 6,000 miles, under NEXEN TIRE’s maintenance schedule. Keep tread condition under review before winter rather than after the first storm.

Carry the traction devices required for the roads you use. Caltrans says drivers must stop and install chains when signs require chains. Under California’s R3 control level, chains or traction devices are required on every vehicle without exception. What I would not recommend

I would not leave a studless winter tire on through a hot, dry summer just to avoid a swap. Continental advises replacing winter tires once temperatures consistently stay above 7 °C, or 45 °F, because warm-weather use can accelerate wear, reduce handling precision, and increase stopping distances on dry pavement. Use the warm months for the three-season set, then return to the winter set before the pass starts freezing overnight.

I would also not buy an affected 2020 NEXEN winter tire from old stock without checking its sidewall identification. NEXEN TIRE’s voluntary replacement program covered 5,447 winter tires produced at its Czech Republic plant in production week 29 of 2020. It included specified Winguard Snow’G3 and Winguard Sport 2 sizes with DOT codes beginning 035 and ending 2920.
